p.113 Lucas Foglia and Emily Jones

Task 3

Make it seem…

Step 1: Choose an assignment completed as part of the Making Workshop

For this step, I chose to focus on Lucas Foglia’s task Make it seem… project. Here is my original response:

1. Make something sad seem beautiful:

2. Make something happy seem sad:

3. Make something normal seem shocking:

4. Make something you want to tell the world seem urgent:

Step 2: Complete the assignment again, using a different medium

1. Make something sad seem beautiful:

2. Make something happy seem sad:

3. Make something normal seem shocking:

Step 3: Critical Rationale

The purpose of this task was to avoid relying on the content within an image in order to provoke feelings. It has challenged me to think about the viewpoint, light and the medium I use in my practise and how this affects the final outcome. I found this task difficult to take on but it has taught me to take more consideration into the composition of my images, what I use to create them and why. I decided to turn the original ideas into 5 second long video clips, without sound. I wanted to see how the moving image affected the mood and concept of the idea and how much I would have to change between the mediums in order to convey a similar tone. I chose to avoid using sound as I wanted to keep emphasis on imagery and how this affected what the audience felt about the subject matter.

I used Premier Pro to edit the clips together. This helped me to re-discover skills which I don’t necessarily use in my practise and despite feeling more confident with my original photographic response to this task, I have been inspired to consider other mediums and to refocus on the context of my image-making. It has taught me to avoid the obvious and research into more techniques I can use in the future.
